Why Asthma is Increasing in Islamabad — Part 2: Real Triggers & Prevention

By Dr. Jehangir Khan · Consultant Pulmonologist, IRC Islamabad · 10 min read · Part 2 of 2

In Part 1 we covered why inhalers are the gold-standard. In Part 2, we explain why clinics in G-11, F-10, Bahria and DHA are seeing more asthma flare-ups — and what you can actually control at home.

In Islamabad, it's not just pollen — PM2.5, dust mites, mold and traffic fumes together keep airway inflammation active.

1. PM2.5 and traffic fumes — G-11, Srinagar Highway, I-8

Islamabad's annual average PM2.5 now regularly crosses WHO limits in winter. Diesel fumes, construction dust in G-11 Markaz, and burning of waste release tiny particles that penetrate deep into the bronchial tubes. For someone with allergic airways, this is daily low-grade inflammation — which is why many patients say “my asthma is fine in summer, worse in November-February.”

2. Pollen surge — March to May, August to September

Paper mulberry and grass pollen is not new, but warmer springs and longer pollen seasons mean higher pollen counts. Pollen + dust mite allergy is a common combination at IRC — nose runs first, chest tightens two days later. FeNO testing often jumps during pollen weeks even when spirometry still looks okay.

3. Dust mites and indoor allergens — the hidden Islamabad trigger

Most asthma patients focus on outdoor pollution, but at IRC our allergy tests show dust mite is the number one indoor trigger in Islamabad homes — especially in closed apartments, carpets, heavy curtains and old mattresses. Dust mite droppings keep airway inflammation active 24 hours a day, which is why night cough and early morning chest tightness are so common.

4. Mold and damp — basements in Bahria, DHA, E-11

New houses with poor ventilation, basement living rooms and winter dampness breed mold. Mold spores are a potent asthma trigger and do not show up on a regular dust test — we test for it separately when history suggests.

"In Islamabad, it's rarely one trigger. It's PM2.5 + dust mite + pollen + mold together — that's why inhaled therapy that controls inflammation daily works better than searching for a single tablet."

5. What you can actually control — prevention checklist
